Legacy Open Mesh: G200 Router passive PoE ports

Topic

This article describes the passive PoE ports on G200-series routers

Environment

  • Open Mesh G200 Routers

Description

The Open Mesh G200 router has two passive PoE ports. Both the LAN 3 and LAN 4 ports on the G200 provide 24V Passive PoE and PoE is disabled by default. When PoE is enabled on these ports in CloudTrax they will always provide 24V power, no matter what device is connected to these ports.

Only Open Mesh devices that accept 24V Passive PoE should be plugged into these ports. Plugging an 802.3af/at port into LAN 3 and LAN 4 on the G200 will more than likely damage the port on the device, whether it's a computer, an access point that does not accept 24V Passive PoE, a switch, or any other device. Please be sure the PoE function is disabled on these ports unless they are plugged into an Open Mesh access point port that accepts 24V Passive PoE.

Open Mesh access points that accept 24V PASSIVE PoE are listed below:

  • A42
  • A62

  • OM Series

Open Mesh access points that DO NOT accept 24V Passive PoE are listed below:

  • A40
  • A60
  • MR Series

Why did we include passive PoE instead of standard 802.3af/at PoE? Passive PoE offers a lower cost and is simpler to support in the small device footprint of the G200. And since our new access points, the A42 and A62 also support passive PoE, it creates a simple way to connect and power WiFi from the G200.
