Understanding Power over Ethernet (PoE) injectors
Topic
This article explains the function of, and use cases for, PoE injectors in the Datto Networking environment.
Environment
- Datto Networking
PoE
PoE works by leveraging a compatible switch to send power across pairs of Ethernet wires that are not in use in the Category 5 or Category 6 cable. If a network node is PoE-enabled, you won't need to run a power supply from the connected device to a power outlet.
Using PoE is advantageous when you need to place a device in a location where power is not readily available, and running a power cable would be cumbersome. Instead, the Ethernet cable is all you need.
If your device doesn’t support PoE, you may be able to add power to your network through the use a PoE injector.
PoE Injector
A Power over Ethernet injector is a modular power supply that provides PoE functionality on a network with a non-PoE switch. If your network switches do not have Power over Ethernet capability, you will need a PoE injector to power Datto Networking access points.
PoE injectors are available through Datto. Older PoE modules may not work with current Datto Networking equipment.
PoE injectors must conform to IEEE 802.3af/at standard to successfully power Datto Access Points.
