User subscriptions

Subscriptions are assigned on a per user basis. Each user can have up to three devices with concurrently active sessions under the same subscription with no additional cost. To modify existing Secure Edge subscriptions, refer to Canceling service and removing subscribers.

New subscriptions can be purchased within Network Manager while provisioning a new user. Purchasing must be allowed by the user completing the task. To confirm this, review the Users page. To add many users at once from existing, unassigned subscriptions, you can upload a CSV file with the information.

The Secure Edge Audit log contains information on the number of unassigned subscriptions, as well as the total number of subscriptions. To view the number of subscriptions that have been purchased but not yet assigned to a user, follow the process below.

  1. Navigate to portal.dattobackup.com

  2. Log in with your Partner Portal credentials.

  3. From the header menu, select Status > Networking Status.

  1. Select the name of a Network or Launch Network Manager, to load the Network Manager.

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Secure Edge to expand the options available.

  1. Select Provisioning.

  2. Select Audit Log from the top right of the screen.

  3. Inside the Audit Log the details column, the information on Gateway and User subscriptions will be listed.

List the subscriptions based on network

To list out the number of user subscriptions purchased, organized by the network they are assigned to, you will need to configure organization mapping. This will allow you to view the subscriptions in the invoice, based on the network they are assigned to. For information on configuring this, please refer to: Link a network.

Users can be invited to use the Datto Secure Edge client using either an existing, unassigned subscription or with a newly purchased subscription. You can also invite many users at once by uploading a CSV file. Doing so uses existing, unassigned subscriptions.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN  Ensure that you have configured your authentication provider as described in the Authentication Settings   section of Configure your Cloud Gateway. If you do not do so, the softclient activation will fail.

  1. Navigate to portal.dattobackup.com

  2. Log in with your Partner Portal credentials.

  3. From the header menu, select Status > Networking Status.

  1. Select the name of a Network or Launch Network Manager, to load the Network Manager.

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Secure Edge to expand the options available.

  1. Select Provisioning.

  2. Select Invite Subscribers to open the Buy Datto Secure Edge pane.

    Users can be invited individually with an unassigned subscription, or by purchasing a new subscription. Additionally, multiple users may be added at once with the bulk add option. Expand the options for the steps of the selected method.

    1. From the tabs listed at the top, select Unassigned Subscriptions to use as previously purchased subscription. The number and type of available subscriptions will be listed at the top.

    2. Fill out the email field with the email address of the user to be invited to the service.

    3. Select your Subscription Type, followed by the Commitment Term from the options available.

    4. Click Add Users to confirm the choice and update the current available subscription count. Doing so will allow you to add additional users if more unassigned subscriptions remain.

    5. If the users will have access to the Secure Edge platform's software, check the Send download link and instructions box. If they'll only be connecting to the appliance and not using the software, you can leave the box cleared.

    6. Acknowledge the terms and conditions. Then, click Assign Subscriptions.

    7. Your new subscribers will receive welcome emails that include the organization code and a link to download the Secure Edge software. They'll need to follow the workflow described in Datto Secure Edge software client: User Installation guide, to complete the activation process.

    1. From the tabs listed at the top, select Buy New Subscriptions. Each user will still need its own subscription, to be selected with the invitation. If no unassigned subscriptions are available, then it will only show this tab.

    2. Select your Subscription Type, followed by the Commitment Term from the options available.

    3. In the Add Users field, enter the email addresses of the users you'd like to invite to the service. To input multiple users, add each on its own line.

    4. When you've finished creating your invitation list, click Add Users. The list of subscribers to invite will populate below for review. Here any can also be removed before continuing if needed.

    5. If the users will have access to the Secure Edge platform's software, check the Send download link and instructions box. If they'll only be connecting to the appliance and not using the software, you can leave the box cleared.

    6. Acknowledge the terms and conditions. Then, click Confirm.

    7. Your new subscribers will receive welcome emails that include the organization code and a link to download the Secure Edge software. They'll need to follow the workflow described in Datto Secure Edge software client: User Installation guide, to complete the activation process.

    Before you begin

    Bulk add uses only existing, unassigned subscriptions. You need enough unassigned subscriptions of each subscription type and commitment term listed in the file. To see what is available, refer to the Viewing current subscriptions section. Buy any missing subscriptions first.

    The authentication provider prerequisite above also applies to users added in bulk.

    1. From the tabs listed at the top, select Unassigned Subscriptions to use as previously purchased subscription. The number and type of available subscriptions will be listed at the top.

    2. Select + Bulk Add to open the Bulk Add Subscribers pane.

    3. Download the CSV template from the pane.

    4. Open the template and add one row for each subscriber. Keep the header row. Do not add, remove, rename or reorder columns. The file must have exactly these columns:

      • email: Enter a valid email address, one subscriber per row. Each address can appear only once in the file, and it must not already be a subscriber on the network. Matching ignores upper and lower case.

      • subscription_type: A subscription type shown in the template, for example; professional. Must match a type for which you have unassigned subscriptions.

      • term: The Commitment term (1y or 3y). Must match a term for which you have unassigned subscriptions.

      • send_email: true or false. This is the same as the "Send download link and instructions" check box. Use true for users who will install the software client. Use false for users who connect only through an appliance.

    5. Save the file in UTF-8 CSV format. The maximum file size is 2 MB.

    6. Drag the file onto the upload area, or browse to it. Network Manager validates the whole file before importing anything.

    7. Review the summary. It shows the number of subscribers to add, the number of invitation emails that will be sent, and the number of unassigned subscriptions that will remain.

    8. Check the acknowledgment box after reviewing the information.

    9. Click Assign Subscriptions. A confirmation message appears, and the new subscribers are listed on the Provisioning page.

    10. Subscribers with send_email set to true receive the same welcome email as users invited one at a time. It includes the organization code and download link. They'll need to follow the workflow described in Datto Secure Edge software client: User Installation guide, to complete the activation process.

    Errors are shown when the uploaded csv file fails validation.

    These will need to be addressed using the table below before uploading the csv file to bulk add the users.

    Error What to do
    The file is missing the column(s): {columns}. It must have exactly these columns: email, subscription_type, term, send_email. Add the missing column, or start again from a fresh template.
    The file has unexpected or duplicated column(s): {columns} Remove any extra or repeated columns.
    The file has no subscriber rows to import. Add at least one subscriber row under the header.
    Row {x} has characters that are not UTF-8 in column {column}. Save the file as UTF-8 CSV and re-upload to proceed. Save the file again as "CSV UTF-8" (in Excel: File > Save As > CSV UTF-8). The header row can show the same error.
    Invalid email address: {email} in row {x}. Correct the email address.
    Invalid subscription type: {value} in row {x}. Use a subscription type exactly as it appears in the template.
    Invalid term: {value} in row {x} Use 1y or 3y.
    Invalid true/false value in send_email (exact wording to be confirmed) Use true or false.
    Duplicate entry found in CSV: {value} in row {x}. Remove the duplicate row.
    The following subscriber already exists: {email}. Remove that user from the file. The user is already a subscriber on this network.
    You don't have enough licenses to add all users. Please purchase {N} more licenses or remove existing subscribers to free up licenses. Buy the missing subscriptions for the type and term named in the message, or remove rows, then upload again.

Each user is able to send data securely between their device and the Datto Secure Edge. High speed data, which enables users to send/receive between their device and the cloud gateway, at a default bandwidth of up to 100 Mbps, is provided until the data limit is reached. The data limit is equal to 100GB per user, shared across all users on the Network. For example, a network with 20 users will have a shared limit of 2TB of data per month pooled across the users.

After users have exceeded the high speed data transfer limit, the data speed will be throttled to 2 Mbps until the end of the billing cycle. At the start of the next billing cycle, the users will regain access to the high speed data transfer.
